New Mills is an ideal base for an organ course. The restored Providence United Reformed Church is home to a fine 1914 J J Binns organ. There are good facilities at the church, and excellent transport links. There are two stations, one serving the Blackpool to Buxton line via Preston and Manchester, the other the Manchester and Sheffield line. For those travelling by car, New Mills is just off the A 6, south of Stockport. There are fine country inns offering en-suite accommodation, and plans are in place to meet participants from the stations and to take them to and from the accommodation.
The organ is a small three manual, allowing Gordon to demonstrate stop selection without confusing beginners with too large a console!
There will be closed circuit television so that students can see exactly what is happening at the console.
Most organ courses take place in the south; this course allows organist from all over the midlands and north to spend an exciting two days in a beautiful part of the England with one of the country's most experienced teachers. And for those who want to make a weekend of it there is a train from London Euston at 7.35 that, with a change at Stockport, arrives in New Mills at 10.06, in good time for the 10.30 start.
